Halloween Switch Witch

Halloween Switch Witch

Halloween Switch Witch

When my boys were small they enjoyed trick-or-treating but I didn't want them to eat all that candy. My friend told me about the Halloween Elf who takes away the candy and leaves a toy in its place. I thought that was a great idea. We let them choose a few pieces then put the rest out by the doorstep at night and in the morning a new toy would be in its place!

Since then I've heard about this tradition from many other parents. Some call it the Halloween Fairy or Switch Witch.

  • We just found out about the switch witch after the holiday last year and definitely plan to start the tradition this year! We have a large candy collection pail and a small, embroidered bag— we will let our daughter fill the little bag with what she’d like to keep and set the pail full out for the switch witch!!

  • This is our first year planning to introduce Switch Witch! I appreciate you sharing this idea!

  • I have been considering the switch witch idea! Candy makes our kids bonkers and it’s just way too much! Such a fun way to still trick or treat, enjoy a treat, and get a fun toy!

  • Hooray for the Switch Witch! We have been feeding our candy to The Candy Monster that we make out of a cardboard box. Once he has the night to chew all the candy, he leaves a gift in trade. This year, I was in a pickle because my youngest has developed a fear of monsters. We will switch to the Switch Witch. Much more catchy! We cannot resist the camaraderie and costumes of trick or treating, so this is a great solution for the “candy problem “.

  • We sort and keep candy until Christmas in the freezer. Anything that can be chopped up gets mixed in with cookies later.

  • What a great idea!

  • We have always just eaten half of our kids candy! Hahaha! I have never heard of these awesome ideas! I’m excited to give them a go!

  • First, we only trick or treat on our street, so we don’t get tons, and then they get to choose a few pieces we spread out for the week. Then we give it away to our church or just toss it. Switch witch sounds fun! We were always just boring and said you only get a few pieces and they never knew any different haha

  • I am so excited to do the Switch Witch with my son! Last Halloween he was still so little and wasn’t really sure what it was all about. Now at 18m he is so excited for halloween! He funny enough has been enjoying the witch decorations more so than any others! He runs around the house with his wand and points it up to cast spells!! We’ve spoken about the SW a little bit already and I’m so excited to see his reaction with it! Already have a fun fall book as his little gift 🍁

  • I first learned of the switch witch from mamanatural, I immediately ordered the book and doll and it has saved me so much worry. Plus I don’t have to sneak candy into the trash for a week now 🤐

  • This year, we are planning to let our kids eat a decent amount on Halloween and then the rest will get turned into a service project with friends.
