Discover the Wonders of Silk Dyeing

Children love learning how dye takes to silk so effortlessly and beautifully! Join us for this simple Valentine's Day craft in silk dyeing.

What You'll Need:

Steps

Prep your dye: Add 4 tablespoons of each color dye into its own bowl. Add 1 1/2 cups of warm water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar for each color.

Iron your White Playsilk and fold it in half. Draw half a heart along the folded edge.

Gather your silk along the outline of your heart.

Your child might need a little help with this part depending on their age.

Tie your gathered silk heart with a rubber band.

Dip the outside of your heart in purple. Be careful not to go past the rubber band. Let your silk sit for a few moments and allow it to soak up the dye. Ring out.

Then dip the other end of your silk - the heart shape - into the pink dye.

Rinse your silk in the sink to release any extra dye. It is best if you try to rinse each side of the silk separately to avoid the colors bleeding into each other.

Ring out your silk and remove the rubber band to reveal your heart shape!

Hang to dry and iron to restore its shine!

Happy Heart Dyeing!

xoxo,
Sarah & Madlyn

  • This is beautiful! I can’t wait to try it with my kids. Do you think food coloring will work as the dye?
