Halloween Switch Witch

Halloween Switch Witch

When my boys were small they enjoyed trick-or-treating but I didn't want them to eat all that candy. My friend told me about the Halloween Elf who takes away the candy and leaves a toy in its place. I thought that was a great idea. We let them choose a few pieces then put the rest out by the doorstep at night and in the morning a new toy would be in its place!

Since then I've heard about this tradition from many other parents. Some call it the Halloween Fairy or Switch Witch.

  • We did the switch witch last year! Gold coins and a few healthy treats.

  • In our family it is the Toothless Gnome who visits. He has no teeth because he eats so much candy! We have been putting our candy out for him since the very first time we took our children trick or treating, and I love the tradition because it adds yet another layer of magic and mystery to Halloween night.

  • We have been doing this as well for several years. It’s been a welcome answer to the influx of candy. At first they were a little scared of the idea of a witch coming at night. I might use the outside door idea to remedy that.

  • Love that idea!! My kids trade most of their candy for cash at the orthodontic office we go to.

  • The Switch Witch had been visiting our home for a few years now… or children both put aside a few treats to enjoy over a week or two and the rest goes to the Switch Witch who, this year, will be bringing them some fall peg dolls and a neck pouch.

  • We trade out the candy for a few organic treats and give the rest away to the soldiers.

  • I love this idea! I’ve been trying to think of a way to remove the candy without tears. This sounds perfect! Thank you so much for the idea. My son is turning three this year and we haven’t started too many traditions. At the moment we live in Okinawa, Japan and so find it difficult to do some of the more traditional fall-time activities. Hoping to moving somewhere that does pumpkins and corn mazes before he is too old.

  • I like this whole switch witch idea! My son is allergic to dairy so their are usually a lot of tears when we throw away all the chocolate candy even though I try to swap it out with fruity candy. But truthfully I like the idea of 90%of the candy disappearing in exchange for a small toy.
    Thanks for the idea!

  • My kids know that they feel really yucky when they eat a bunch of sugar, so we offer to get them better chocolate bars in place of some and money for the other candy. They totally go for this because we go to the natural food sections and they pick out their favorites that are healthier. On the night we get the candy, we also do a family movie night and pretend we are at the movies and we eat the chocolate with some popcorn.
